DIY Wood Boiler & Outdoor Wood Furnace Kits
Showing 38 products
These DIY wood boiler kits bundle the controls, fittings, and diagrams you need to finish a homemade boiler or connect an outdoor wood furnace to your home’s heat and hot water. Each control and plumbing kit includes an installation or wiring diagram, and many come in crimp ring, stainless steel crimp ring, or SharkBite versions to match the fittings you already use.
How to Choose a DIY Wood Boiler Kit
The kits are grouped by the job they do in the system. A homemade boiler usually needs a damper and control kit to run the fire, plus at least one plumbing kit to move heat into the house.
Damper and Control Kits
The DIYKitComplete has the parts to control the draft and water temperature on a homemade wood boiler. It includes an AQ007 Ranco digital controller, a DW1204 stainless dry well for the temperature probe, a 4C446 Dayton blower rated at 148 CFM, an FC546 fan cover, and an LS001 laminated solenoid with its bracket, blower wire, and wiring diagram. When the aquastat calls for heat, the blower starts and the solenoid lifts the fan cover to feed air to the fire. When the blower shuts off, the cover drops and blocks air while the boiler idles, which cuts down on overheating and smoke.
If you already have a Dayton fan, the DIYKitAQ includes the controller, dry well, and damper hardware without the blower. The DIYKit is the damper hardware alone, with the fan cover, solenoid, bracket, blower wire, draft spring, and screws. The SDKit, SDKitAQ, and SDKitComplete follow the same tiers for Shaver wood furnaces. The SDKit fits only Shaver furnaces with the 1TDP3 fan, and the SDKitComplete adds a digital aquastat and a 75 CFM fan.
Replacement parts are also sold on their own, including boiler aquastats, wood furnace blowers, and laminated solenoids. For a walkthrough of swapping the fan, see our blower replacement guide.
Domestic Hot Water Kits
The Domestic Hot Water Install Kit includes the fittings and an installation diagram for adding a brazed plate heat exchanger, which lets the boiler heat your household water. The exchanger is sold separately in our brazed plate exchangers collection. The Boiler Kits with Internal Coil are built for systems that use a brazed plate exchanger or a boiler with an internal domestic coil. They come in standard and 1-1/4" sizes and include Teflon tape and an installation diagram.
Forced-Air Furnace Kits
The Aquastat & Hydro Coil Kits connect an outdoor wood boiler or furnace to the hot air furnace already in your home. One thermostat runs both systems, and if the wood unit runs low on heat, the indoor furnace takes over until the wood unit catches up. A thermostat with four or more wires works with the kit as is, while a two-wire thermostat also needs the FC8285 Fan Control Center. To bypass the water-to-air exchangers while still heating domestic hot water, add the Manual By-Pass Kit, which requires a 1" crimp tool.
Pool, Spa, and Boiler Fill Kits
The Pool Spa Kits come in 1" and 3/4" sizes and work with open or closed loop systems. The 1" kit includes fittings for SS260 and SS370 Series wood boiler heat exchangers, along with an installation diagram and wiring directions. The Manual Feed Kit uses 1" PEX fittings and crimp rings to refill a boiler by hand, and it’s most often used on open loop systems.
DIY Wood Boiler Kit FAQ
These answers cover common questions about building a homemade wood boiler and connecting it to your home.
Can I build my own outdoor wood boiler with these kits?
These kits supply the controls, draft hardware, and plumbing connections, while the firebox, water jacket, and housing come from your own build. The DIYKitComplete handles draft and temperature control, and the hot water, Hydro Coil, and pool kits connect the boiler to the rest of your home.
What’s the difference between the DIYKit, DIYKitAQ, and DIYKitComplete?
The DIYKit is the auto damper hardware only, so you supply the fan and aquastat. The DIYKitAQ adds the AQ007 Ranco digital controller and DW1204 dry well. The DIYKitComplete adds a 148 CFM Dayton blower on top of that, so it’s the only one of the three that runs without parts from another source.
Do I need a crimp tool, or can I use SharkBite fittings?
The crimp ring kits need a crimp tool sized to the fittings, and the Manual By-Pass Kit lists a 1" crimp tool as a requirement. The SharkBite versions use push-to-connect fittings, so they install without crimping. Replacement fittings are in our SharkBite fittings and tools collection.
Will the Hydro Coil Kit work with my thermostat?
The kit uses your existing thermostat if it has four or more wires. A two-wire thermostat also needs the FC8285 Fan Control Center, which is sold separately.
Can I use these kits to heat water with a wood stove coil?
The domestic hot water kits heat household water through a brazed plate heat exchanger connected to an outdoor wood boiler. This collection doesn’t include a coil for mounting inside an indoor wood stove.
Who makes these DIY kits?
The DIY kits, Shaver damper kits, and plumbing kits are put together and sold by Alternative Heating & Supplies under the AHS brand. The DIYKit, DIYKitAQ, and DIYKitComplete are made in the USA, and the DIYKitComplete ships assembled.
